GIBSONS ROAD

Remodelling and extension
Heaton Moor, Stockport
Completed 2019

This fine Victorian home was poorly connected to its lovely mature garden with a small kitchen and unwanted conservatory; the house was reconfigured and extended creating a series of comfortable family spaces and a better and more generous connection to the garden.

The client bought this large attractive semi-detached house in 2018, however it had a significant shortcoming in that the ground floor of the house was considerably higher than the garden and therefore not well connected. The client’s main aims were to reorganise the rear half of house to give them the space their family needed and create a better connection with the beautiful garden.

The design reorganised the internal spaces as well as creating a new single storey contemporary extension, which together provide a formal living area, snug, study, utility spaces, and large family kitchen and dining area. The new extension is a lightweight timber frame and well insulated with woodfibre insulation with handmade brick cladding at plinth level and cedar boarding above. All window, external doors and the rooflight are triple glazed and all junctions taped internally for best possible airtightness.

The result is a spacious, contemporary addition to rear of the house with a generous connection to the garden. The family has three teenage children, and the remodelled home has spaces for them to come together and separate spaces to work and relax.

In terms of the space and design I don’t think we can find fault. The space works really well. It’s warm in winter, doesn’t get too hot in summer (the roof overhang prevents that). It’s a good space for family and for entertaining. We get joy from the views into the garden and the aesthetics of the whole extension.
